Verified 14 octobre 2019 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Yes. If you are applying for French nationality, you can apply for the francization of your surname and/or your first name. You can also make this request if you have recently become French.

You want to become French

In order to facilitate your integration, you can request the francization of your surname and/or your first names when you request acquisition of French nationality..

Several possibilities exist for francization of the name ::

  • Translate your name if it can be translated. In this case, you must provide a certificate by a certified translator. For example, Dos Santos in Dessaint.
  • Transform your foreign name to give it a French sound. Your new name should not be too far from your birth name. For example, Fayad in Fayard.
  • Use the French name of a ascending French
  • Use your French name before a decision by the authorities of your country of origin in the case of a reinstatement

However, you cannot take a new name that is unrelated to your birth name or that you have never worn in your family.

Warning : if you do not have a first name and request francization of your name, you must request the attribution of a french first name.

Several possibilities exist for francization of first name ::

  • Replace your first or foreign first names with one or more French first names. In case of multiple first names, it is possible not to frank them all. For example, Maria, Antonia in Marie Adrienne or Marie, Antonia or Maria, Adrienne. The French first name can be a translation of your foreign first name or any other French first name. For example, Antonia in Adrienne.
  • Add a French first name to your foreign first name. The added French first name can be placed before or after your original first name. For example: Ahmed in Ahmed, Alain, or Alain, Ahmed.
  • Replace your foreign first name or foreign first names with one or more French first names and add one or two French first names. For example, Giovanni in Charles, Patrick.
  • Delete your foreign first name or foreign first names and keep only your French first name or get such a first name. For example, Kouassi, Paul in Paul.
  • Reverse first names. This operation is only accepted if there is already a French first name in the corpus of your first names. This French first name must be placed in 1mother position.

FYI : you can also get a french first name if you do not have a first name on your birth certificate.
