Application for a driving licence: what identification can be presented?

You can submit one of the following documents to prove your identity when applying for a driving licence.

You are French
  • National Secure Identity Card valid or expired for less than 5 years
  • Biometric passport, service passport or mission passport valid or expired for less than 5 years
  • Non-biometric passport valid or expired for less than 2 years
  • Safe Driving Licence European Union
  • Receipt of proof of identity (for persons who are prohibited from leaving the territory)

FYI  

a member of the Foreign Legion can justify his identity with a valid military card. An inmate may present the receipt that was given to him in exchange for his identity documents.

If you are European

You are concerned if you are a national of: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, San Marino, Holy See, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

For a major

  • National Identity Card

  • Driving licence issued by an EU country in accordance with European Union

For a minor

  • National Identity Card
  • Passport
  • A valid parent's passport if the child is present and the photo is similar
If you have another nationality

For a major

  • Passport
  • Temporary residence card (CST), regardless of the entry
  • Long-stay visa valid residence permit validated by the French Office of Immigration and Integration (Ofii)
  • Multi-year residence card, regardless of the entry
  • Certificate of residence for Algerian
  • Provisional authorisation to stay, whatever the indication on the card provided that it extends a stay in the territory for a period exceeding 185 days
  • Receipt of an application to renew one of these securities
  • Certificate of asylum seeker renewed for more than 9 months and authorising to work
  • Receipt recognising the recognition of international protection and granting refugee, stateless or subsidiary protection
  • Refugee Travel Document

For a minor

  • Passport
  • A valid parent's passport if the child is present and the photo is similar
  • Valid Minor foreigner Traffic Document
  • Valid Republican Identity Document (TIR)
  • Receipt recognising the recognition of international protection and granting refugee, stateless or subsidiary protection
