Road Safety Certificate (BSR), driving licence category AM

You want to drive a 50 cm scooter3 and you wonder if you need a driver's licence? The road safety certificate (BSR) allows you to drive from the age of 14 years one 50 cm3 scooter or cart. The BSR corresponds to driving licence category AM. We tell you what you need to know about the BSR and what steps you need to take to get it.
Step-by-step approach
The BSR (category AM) allows the following vehicles to operate:
- Moped (for example, 50 cm scooter3)
- Light motor quadricycle (for example, cart, with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3)
FYI
if you born before 1988, you do not need a driving licence to drive a moped or light quadricycle . Also, you do not need the BSR (AM category) if you already have another class of licence (e.g. permit B) or title European equivalent.
You can pass the BSR (AM category) from 14 years.
To validate the theoretical training of the BSR (category AM), you must obtain 1st or 2nd level road safety certificate (ASSR) or road safety certificate (ASR).
Warning
ASSR (1)to or 2nd level) or the ASR do not allow you to drive a motor vehicle.
Where to go?
Contact a registered establishment, school or school of associative conduct .
When registering, a training booklet, paper or dematerialised, is given to you.
This book contains questionnaire that you must complete before you begin practical training.
You have this booklet with you during the duration of the training.
What price?
Practical training is free and negotiable.
Count Between €150 and €400 in a car school.
How long?
Practical training shall be 8 hours.
It takes place on 2 days (Maximum 4 hours per day).
What content?
You can choose one of 2 options following:
- option light quadricycle
- option moped
The moped option is recognition of the follow-up of the light motor quadricycle option.
Training consists of 5 Sequences following:
- Exchanges on individual representations around driving
- Non-operating (1 hour training
- Route Code
- Driving on lanes open to public traffic (3 hours training)
- Risk awareness. If you minor, at least one of your parents or legal representative must be present.
What equipment?
Moped Option
On 2 (off-road driving) and 4 (driving on lanes open to public traffic), you must have the following equipment:
- Certified Headset
- Gloves suitable for motorcycle practice (either NF, CE or EPI marking, or reinforced with a wrist closure)
- Long sleeved jacket
- Pants or combination
- Boots or high shoes. Rubber boots and windbreaks are not allowed.
In case equipment not in compliancetraining cannot take place.
Light motor quadricycle option
There is no specific equipment for the light motor quadricycle option.
Moped Option
At the end of the hands-on training, during the last risk awareness sequence, you receive a certificate of follow-up of training moped option.
If you are a minor, at least one of your parents (or legal representative) must be present.
The certificate entitles you to drive in France one moped during 4 months from the date of issue.
Beyond this deadline, you have the RSO (category AM of the permit).
Light motor quadricycle option
At the end of the hands-on training, during the last risk awareness sequence, you receive a certification of follow-up training light motor quadricycle option.
If you are a minor, at least one of your parents (or legal representative) must be present.
The certificate entitles you to drive in France one light quadricycle during 4 months from the date of issue.
Beyond this deadline, you have the RSO (category AM of the permit).
Only self-study or the school of associative conduct where you have completed the training may apply of BSR: titleContent (category AM of the driving licence).
You must provide the following documents in a scanned version:
- Certificate of identity
- Proof of domicile
- Digital Signature (If you don't have access to a digital signature and photo service, you can complete and mail a photo signature (FPS) form during the remote procedure)
- If you were born in 1988 or later, certificate of follow-up of the practical training of the BSR, accompanied by ASSR 1 or ASSR 2 or ASR
- For 1re application for a permit, if you are a french national, 17 years of age or older, but not older than 25 years of age, copy of the individual certificate of participation in the defence and citizenship day (JDC) or provisional certificate pending at the JDC or individual exemption certificate
- If you are a foreigner, proof of your regular stay or, if you are exempt from a residence permit, proof of your presence in France for at least 6 months (payroll, rent receipt...)
You follow the production and sending of your driving licence online.
The online service is accessible via FranceConnect or with your ID CHILDREN: titleContent , in French only
If you don't have an ANTS ID, you can create an account to have a personal space on the ANTS website.
Once connected to your space CHILDREN: titleContent, you view your request in the dashboard.
Driver's licence: follow the progress of his driving application
Shipping driver's licenceExpert Letter.
This is a secure shipment, with hand-over against signature.
- Address that you specify during the online procedure must be as complete as possible
(building number, flat number, mailbox number, floor, corridor, staircase, "resident",...) - Your mailbox shall submit first name of the person receiving the mail.
If you are absent when passing the factor, you must go to the Post Office in 15 days with your notice of passage or with the number of the Expert Letter.
If you could not go to the Post Office within 15 days, you have nothing to do.
Your permit will be sent to you.

If you obtained the BSR (category AM) on or after January 19, 2013
Validity is 15 years from the date of issue.
The validity is written on the document.
You can drive in all European Union countries.
However, verify minimum age requirement to drive moped or light quadricycle.

if your licence is suspended, invalidated or cancelled, ask online a licence with category AM only. However, make sure that the driving ban does not apply to mopeds and light quadricycles. For example, in the case of a repeat of alcohol.
If you obtained the BSR by January 19, 2013
Validity is not limited in time.
You can drive mopeds or light quadricycles only in France.

If you obtained the RSO (AM permit) on or after January 19, 2013
After successfully completing the training, the self-school will issue you a certificate and will ask for your BSR: titleContent (AM permit).
If you lose the certificate before receiving the BSR (AM permit), request one duplicate at your school.
If thereafter, you lose the BSR (AM permit), you apply online for a new AM licence on theCHILDREN: titleContent.
If you obtained the BSR by January 19, 2013
You request duplicate to the self-school that delivered the BSR: titleContent.
If the car school has closed in the meantime, you must complete the training again to obtain the category AM of the driving licence.
