Road safety certificate (BSR), category AM of driving license

You want to drive a 50 cm scooter3 and you wonder if you need a driver's license?

The road safety certificate (BSR) allows you to drive from the age of 14 years one scooter of 50 cm3 or a cart. The BSR corresponds to driving license category AM.

We tell you what you need to know about the BSR and the steps to follow to get it.

Step-by-step approach

The BSR (category AM) authorizes the following vehicles to be driven:

  • Moped (e.g. 50 cm scooter3)
  • Light motor quadricycle (for example, cart, quad with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3)

FYI  

if you are born before 1988, you do not need a driving license to drive a moped or a light motor quadricycle . In addition, you do not need the BSR (AM category) if you already have another category of license (e.g. B-permit) or a title European equivalent.

You can pass the BSR (AM category) from 14 years.

To validate the theoretical training of the BSR (category AM), you must obtain the 1st or 2nd level road safety school certificate (RSSA) or the Road Safety Certificate (RSC).

Warning  

the ASSR (1er or 2nd level) or the ASR do not allow you to drive a motor vehicle.

Where to go?

Go to a licensed institution, driving school or school of associative conduct.

Upon registration, a training booklet, paper or dematerialized, is given to you.

This book contains a questionnaire that you must complete before you begin practical training.

You must have this booklet with you during the entire duration of the training.

What price?

The price of practical training is free and negotiable.

Count between €150 and €400 in a driving school.

How long?

Practical training lasts at least 8 hours.

It takes place on 2 days (maximum 4 hours per day).

What content?

You can choose one of 2 options following:

  • Option light quadricycle
  • Option moped

The moped option is worth recognizing the follow-up of the light motor quadricycle option.

Training consists of 5 sequences following:

  1. Exchanges on individual representations around driving
  2. Driving out of circulation (1 hour minimum training course )
  3. Highway Code
  4. Driving on roads open to public traffic (3 hours minimum training)
  5. Risk awareness. If you are minor, at least one of your parents or your legal representative must be present.

What equipment should I bring?

Moped option

During sequences 2 (non-traffic driving) and 4 (driving on roads open to public traffic), you must have:

  • Certified helmet
  • Motorcycle gloves (either NF, CE or PPE marking, or reinforced and fitted with a wrist closure)
  • Long-sleeved jacket or jacket
  • Pants or jumpsuit
  • Boots or high shoes. Rubber boots and windbreakers are not allowed.

In case non-compliant equipment, training cannot take place.

Light motor quadricycle option

There's no no special equipment for the light motor quadricycle option.

Moped option

At the end of the hands-on training, during the last training on risk awareness, you receive a certificate of completion of training moped option.

If you are a minor, at least one of your parents (or your legal representative) must be present.

The certificate authorizes you to drive in France one moped during 4 months from the date of issue.

After this period, you must have the BSR (AM category of license).

Light motor quadricycle option

At the end of the hands-on training, during the last training on risk awareness, you receive a certificate of completion of training option light quadricycle motor.

If you are a minor, at least one of your parents (or your legal representative) must be present.

The certificate authorizes you to drive in France one light motor quadricycle during 4 months from the date of issue.

After this period, you must have the BSR (AM category of license).

Alone driving school or the school of associative conduct where you have taken the training may apply of the BSR: titleContent (category AM of driving license).

You must provide them with the following documents in digital format:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of domicile
  • Digital photo-signature (If you do not have access to a photo and digital signature service, it is suggested to fill in and mail a photo signature form (FPS) during the teleprocedure)
  • If you were born in 1988 or later, proof of follow-up of the BSR practical training, accompanied by the ASSR 1 or the ASSR 2 or the ASR
  • If you are French, aged from 17 years to 25 years, individual certificate of participation in the Defense and Citizenship Day (JDC) or individual exemption certificate, or national service status certificate, or provisional national service status certificate
  • If you are a foreigner, proof of regularity of the stay or, if you are exempt from a residence permit, proof of your presence in France for at least 6 months (payroll, rent receipt...)

You can follow online the manufacture and sending of your driving license.

The online service is accessible via FranceConnect or with your credentials ANTS: titleContent , in French only.

If you do not have ANTS credentials, it is proposed to create an account to have a personal space on the ANTS website.

Once connected to your space ANTS: titleContent, you view your request in the dashboard.

Track the progress of your driving license application

If you obtained the BSR (AM category) on or after January 19, 2013

Validity is 15 years from the date of issue.

The validity shall be recorded on the document.

You can drive in all European Union countries.

However, check the minimum age requirement to drive a moped or a light motor quadricycle.

if your license is suspended, invalidated or canceled, you can request online a license with the AM category only. Make sure, however, that the driving ban does not also apply to mopeds and light motor quadricycles. For example, if there is a recurrence of alcohol levels.

If you obtained the BSR before January 19, 2013

Validity is not limited pitch in time.

You can drive mopeds or light quadricycles only in France.

If you obtained the BSR (AM permit) on or after January 19, 2013

After successfully completing the training, the driving school delivers you a certificate and takes care of asking for your BSR: titleContent (AM license).

If you lose the attestation before receiving the BSR (AM permit), request a duplicate at your driving school.

If thereafter, you lose the BSR (AM license), you must apply online for a new AM permit on the websiteANTS: titleContent.

If you obtained the BSR before January 19, 2013

You must request a duplicate to the driving school that delivered you the BSR: titleContent.

If the driving school has closed in the meantime, you must retake the training to obtain the AM category of the driving license.
