Road safety certificate (BSR), category AM of driving license

You're wondering if we need to have the road safety certificate (BSR) to drive a 50 cm scooter3 (moped) ? We provide you with the information you need to know and the steps you need to take to get the BSR corresponding to category AM of the driving license.
Step-by-step approach
The BSR: titleContent (category AM of the license) allows the following vehicles to be driven, depending on the option chosen:
- Moped (e.g. 50 cm scooter3)
- Light motor quadricycle (for example, cart, quad with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3)
Please note
If you are born before 1988, you do not need a driving license to drive a moped or a light motor quadricycle . In addition, you do not need the BSR (AM category) if you already have another category of license (e.g. B-permit) or a title European equivalent.
You can pass the BSR: titleContent (category AM) from 14 years.
To validate the theoretical training BSR: titleContent (AM category of license) , you must obtain 1st or 2d level road safety school certificate (RSSA) or the Road Safety Certificate (RSC).
Warning
ASSR (1er or 2d level) or the ASR do not allow you to drive a motor vehicle.
Which option to choose?
You can choose one of the 2 options following:
- Option light motor quadricycle
- Option moped.
Please note
You get by equivalence the practical part of the BSR: titleContent for the light motor quadricycle option if you have obtained the certificate of completion of initial training in the context of early learning to drive.
What is the content of the training?
Training consists of 5 sequences following:
- Exchanges on individual performances around driving (30 minutes)
- Driving off-road (1 hour minimum)
- Highway Code (30 minutes)
- Driving on roads open to public traffic (3 hours minimum)
- Risk awareness (1 hour minimum). If you are a minor, at least one of your parents or legal representative must be present.
How long?
Practical training lasts at least 8 hours. If this period is exceeded, your consent must be sought. If you are a minor, at least one of your parents or legal representative has to agree.
Training takes place on 2 days at least and may not exceed 4 hours per day.
What price?
The price of practical training is free and negotiable. Count between €180 and €450 depending on which driving school you choose.
What equipment should I bring?
The rules vary depending on the option chosen.

Moped option
During sequences 2 (non-traffic driving) and 4 (driving on roads open to public traffic), you must have:
- Certified helmet
- Motorcycle gloves (either NF, CE or PPE marking, or reinforced and fitted with a wrist closure)
- Long-sleeved jacket or jacket
- Pants or jumpsuit
- Boots or high shoes. Rubber boots and windbreakers are not allowed.
In case non-compliant equipment, training cannot take place.
Light motor quadricycle option
There's no no special equipment for the light motor quadricycle option.
Where to go?
Go to a licensed driving school.

Upon registration, a digital training booklet it's given to you. This booklet shall at least conform to the content of the template available on Legifrance.
This book contains a questionnaire that you must complete before you begin practical training.
At the end of the practical training, you receive a certificate of follow-up of the training, moped option or light motor quadricycle.

Moped option
At the end of the hands-on training, during the last training on risk awareness, you receive a certificate of completion of training moped option if the 3 conditions the following are completed:
- You have attended the training with sufficient attendance
- You were actively involved in the training
- You have complied with the safety rules essential to driving a moped.
If you are a minor, at least one of your parents or legal representative must be present.
The certificate will authorized to drive in France one moped during 4 months from the date of issue. After this period, you must have the BSR (AM category of license).
Light motor quadricycle option
At the end of the hands-on training, during the last training on risk awareness, you receive a certificate of completion of training option light quadricycle motor if the 3 conditions the following are completed:
- You have attended the training with sufficient attendance
- You were actively involved in the training
- You have complied with the safety rules essential to driving a light motor quadricycle.
If you are a minor, at least one of your parents (or legal representative) must be present.
The certificate will authorized to drive in France one light motor quadricycle during 4 months from the date of issue. After this period, you must have the BSR (AM category of license).
Reminder
If you have obtained the certificate of completion of initial training in the context of early learning to drive, you get by equivalence the practical part of the BSR: titleContent for the light motor quadricycle option. In this case, the certificate of follow-up of the training option light quadricycle motor is given to you, after checking the follow-up of the theoretical part.
Only driving school where you took the training can apply of the BSR: titleContent (category AM of driving license).
You must provide the following documents:
- Proof of identity
- Proof of domicile
- Digital photo-signature (if you do not have access to a photo and digital signature service, it is suggested to fill in and mail a photo signature form (FPS) during the teleprocedure)
- If you were born in 1988 or later, proof of follow-up of the BSR practical training, accompanied by the ASSR 1 or the ASSR 2 or the ASR
- If necessary, medical advice (form cerfa no. 14880)
- If you are French, aged from 17 years to 25 years, individual certificate of participation in the Defense and Citizenship Day (JDC), or individual exemption certificate, or national service status certificate, or provisional national service status certificate.
- If you are a foreigner, proof of regularity of the stay or, if you are exempt from a residence permit, proof of your presence in France for at least 6 months (payroll, rent receipt...).

The validity of the driving license shall be 15 years from the date of issue. The end of validity date shall be entered on the driving license.
You can drive in all European Union countries. However, check the minimum age requirement to drive a moped or a light motor quadricycle.

Driving rights
The benefit of BSR training is for life, unless the judge decides following certain traffic offenses.
Paper Attestation
The certificate of achievement of the BSR shall be valid for an unlimited period. You can only drive mopeds or light quadricycles in France.
However, if you obtain another category of license, for example, license B, the BSR's certificate of achievement is written on the new driving license. In this case, the period of validity of the title varies according to its format (pink 3-pane card or “bank card”).

Loss of the certificate of completion of training
After successfully completing the training, the driving school will issue you a certificate of training follow-up and will take care of applying for the driving license (BSR: titleContent, category AM of the license). If you have lost this certificate before receiving the driving license, you can download a Secure Driving Rights Certificate (SDA).
Loss of driving license
In case of loss of driving license, you must make the declaration of loss together with the application for a new driving license. To justify your driving rights while waiting to receive the new title, you can download a secure certificate of driving rights (ADCS).
Before 19 January 2013
The approach varies depending on whether you have obtained another category of driver's license since obtaining the BSR: titleContent . For example, a B license (car and van).
You got another class of driver's license
In case of loss of driving license, you must make the declaration of loss together with the application for a new driving license. To justify your driving rights while waiting to receive the new title, you can download a secure certificate of driving rights (ADCS).
You only have the BSR
You must request a duplicate to the driving school that delivered you the BSR: titleContent. If the driving school has closed in the meantime, you must take the training again to obtain the BSR, category AM of the driving license.
