If you buy a car in France or abroad, you have 1 month to register it and thus obtain a gray card (registration certificate). In the event of a roadside inspection, failure to show a gray card may result in a fine of up to €750.. You also risk the immediate immobilization of the vehicle. The procedure is no longer carried out in the prefecture but in the ANTS, by dematerialized way.

Request a gray card from a used vehicle with a French registration

You must have a digital copy (photo or scan) of several documents:

  • Form cerfa 13750
  • Proof of domicile less than 6 months (or, in the case of joint holders, proof of the person whose address will appear on the gray card)
  • Vehicle gray card, marked with

    Sold on (day/month/year)

    or

    Assigned on (day/month/year)

    , and with the signature of the former owner (or all other joint holders, if any)
  • If the vehicle is more than 4 years old, proof of the valid roadworthiness test, unless the vehicle is exempted.. The technical inspection must be less than 6 months old on the day of the gray card application: if the deadline is exceeded, you will have to carry out a new check at your expense
  • If you go for someone else, mandate signed identification the person for whom you are proceeding

You must have transfer codegiven by the former owner of the vehicle.

You must certify on the honor that the gray card applicant has

  • a vehicle insurance certificate
  • and a driving license corresponding to the category of the registered vehicle.

You do not have to attach a digital copy (photo or scan) of the driver's license. However, you may be asked to do so when you are examining your file.

You must also provide information, including:

  • the identity of the holder (and possibly co-holders) of the gray card: surname, given names, sex, date and place of birth, telephone number and e-mail address,
  • your bank details.

Regulation gray card amount must be made by credit card.

  • and an Interim Certificate of Registration (ICC), which you must print out. The CPI allows you to travel for 1 month, only in France, waiting to receive your gray card.

However, the delay may be longer

  • if your request is incomplete or needs to be analyzed by the instructor department (the production of the gray card can only be launched after this step)
  • or based on the number of requests being processed.

Follow your gray card request

If you are not present during the passage of the factor, a notice of passage will be filed with you. You then have 15 days to retrieve your document at La Poste (or give a proxy to a third party to do it for you). After this period, the title is returned to the sender. You will need to contact the ANTS to have it returned to you.

Please note

you must keep the old gray card for 5 years and then destroy it.

One Provisional Certificate of Registration (ICC) will be made available immediately. It allows you to travel for a month (in France only) while waiting to receive your final gray card.

  • Proof of technical inspection, if the vehicle is more than 4 years old and is not exempt.. The check must be less than 6 months old (when countervisit has been prescribed, the time allowed to carry out it must not be exceeded) and must have been carried out in France or in the European Union if the vehicle was registered there.
