You buy one used vehicle (car or motorcycle for example) in France or abroad and you want register ?

You 1 month to request the new carte grise.

The process is carried out on the internet or to a qualified automotive professional. It is no longer possible to do the gait in the prefecture or sub-prefecture.

In France

You must have transfer code, which was given to you by the previous owner of the vehicle.

You must have a digital copy (photo or scan) following documents ::

  • Form cerfa 13750
  • Proof of domicile less than 6 months (in case of co-holders, proof of the person whose address is to appear on the carte grise)
  • carte grise of the vehicle, with Sold on (day/month/year) or assigned on (day/month/year), with the signature of all former co-holders
  • If the vehicle is more than 4 years old: proof of technical inspection except where the vehicle is exempted. It must be less than 6 months old (2 months if one counter-visit has been prescribed). If the time limit is exceeded, you will have to carry out a new check, at your expense.
  • If you do the walk for someone else: mandate signed identity document of the person for whom you are taking the

You must certify on the honour that the carte grise applicant has a vehicle insurance certificate and a driving licence corresponding to the category of the vehicle registered.

You do not have to attach a digital copy (photo or scan) of the driver's licence. But this can be requested when you are investigating your file.

You must provide the following information:

  • Identity of the holder (and possibly co-holders) of the carte grise (name, first names, sex, date and place of birth, telephone number and email address)
  • Your bank details

Abroad

You must have a digital copy (photo or scan) following documents ::

  • carte grise of origin, without specific mention, or an official part of the vehicle's ownership
  • If the carte grise has been kept by the administrative authorities of the foreigner: official document indicating it (or valid international certificate for automobiles issued by those authorities)
  • Form cerfa 13750
  • Proof of domicile less than 6 months (in case of co-holders, proof of the person whose address is to appear on the carte grise)
  • carte grise of the vehicle, with Sold on (day/month/year) or Assigned on (day/month/year), with the signatures of all former co-holders
  • If the vehicle is more than 4 years old: proof of technical inspection except where the vehicle is exempted. It must be less than 6 months old (2 months if one counter-visit has been prescribed). If the time limit is exceeded, you will have to carry out a new check, at your expense. It must have been carried out in France (or in a European Union country).
  • If the vehicle was previously registered in an EU country : tax receipts issued by the main tax receipts certifying that VAT has been paid in France
  • If the vehicle was previously registered in a country outside the European Union : Customs clearance certificate 846A, unless the application for registration is endorsed with an exemption notice issued by Customs
  • If you do the walk for someone else: mandate signed identity document of the person for whom you are taking the
  • If the old carte grise cannot be provided or does not match the imported vehicle or does not identify it or does not include all the mandatory, supporting documentation corresponding to your situation:
    • European certificate of conformity issued by the manufacturer, published if necessary in a language other than French. It may be issued as a digital document.

    • Certificate of identification with a Community type

    • Isolated Receipt Report (ISR) prepared by a Dreal: titleContent

Who shall I contact

At the end of the process on the Internet, you get 3 elements:

  • A file number
  • An acknowledgement of your application
  • An Interim Certificate of Registration (ICC), which you must print. The CPI allows you to travel during 1 month, only in France, while waiting to receive your carte grise.

You will receive your carte grise under secure fold, generally in the 7 working days.

However, the time limit may be longer if your application is incomplete or must be analysed by the instructor department (the carte grise can only be manufactured after this stage). The time limit may also be longer depending on the number of requests being processed.

If you are not present during the passage of the letter, a notice of passage will be filed. You then 15 days to retrieve your document at La Poste (or give power of attorney to a third party to do it for you). After this period, the title is returned to the sender. You will need to contact the ANTS to have it returned.

Please note

you must keep the old carte grise for 5 years, then destroy it.

It is registered in France

  • carte grise of the vehicle, closed with the words Sold on (day/month/year) or Assigned on (day/month/year), with the signatures of all former co-holders

  • Proof of technical inspection, if the vehicle is more than 4 years old and is not exempted. It must date less than 6 months (2 months if counter-visit has been prescribed). If the time limit is exceeded, you will have to carry out a new check, at your expense.
  • Form cerfa 13750
  • Form cerfa 15776 declaration of transfer of the vehicle completed and signed by the former and new owner. If there are multiple co-owners, everyone must sign it. If you have lost the completed and signed form, you will need to contact the seller to resubmit the form.
  • Certificate of insurance of the vehicle to be registered

In addition to the cost of the carte grise, the professional will charge you an amount corresponding to the service he performs in your place.

This sum is freely fixed by the trader.

One Interim Certificate of Registration (ICC) is issued immediately. It allows you to move around for 1 month (in France only) waiting to receive your final carte grise.

In case conversion former registration (type 123 AB 01, FNI) SIV, an ICC is also issued.
